Fountains Abbey Bunkhouse Weekend
17/02/2012 - 19/02/2012
Sue and I are planning a weekend in the National Trust bunkhouse in the grounds of Fountains Abbey near Ripon, Yorkshire.
It will be weekend of 18th/19th Feb. The bunkhouse is basic but in a great location, sleeping 16 in bunk rooms. There’s good walking nearby and cycling also.
Depending on final numbers, the cost of the accommodation will be around £30 each for the weekend, plus we’ll do Friday evening dinner, breakfasts and packed lunches on the Sat and Sun. We can think about Sat evening nearer the time.
The decision seems to be to go walking rather than cycling, though feel free to bring your bike if you’re keen!
If anyone has a map of the area, please bring it and let me know you have one. Sue will as ever be catering superbly for us, but bring your own booze as it’s a long cold walk to the pub, so we will eat in the bunkhouse both nights.
The address is:Whitefields Cottage
Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal
The info I have does not give exact directions to the Cottage, and someone mentioned that mobile reception is poor.
The only directions I have are to the Estate Visitor Centre, from where we can collect the keys between 2pm and 5pm. The Estate Office is located in the Visitor Centre complex, approached along the estate drive leading off the B6265 approx 3 miles from the outskirts of Ripon.
Estate Office is on 01765 643172.
Is anyone planning on arriving early afternoon? If anyone has a better recollection than me of directions to the Cottage, please let us all know!
Please bring sleeping bags or duvet, and towels. They provide sheets, pillows and pillowcases.
Because of the distance, it makes sense to car share as much as possible. Could you let me know roughly what time you plan to leave and if you have any car space to offer.
See you next Friday.
I seem to remember going in the entrance, left (not sure here?) along a long drive past the church and through the deer park and then turning right at the end of the road to the house. If you have a look at the aerial photo/map, it is the house north of the main park next to the B6265: How to find us
Typically I think the other map on the Fountains site is inverted with north at the bottom.
The bunkhouse is at the green arrow shown here.
You enter by driving along Studley Rd B6265, turn off to go along Studley Ln into Studley Roger. At a triangular junction with Plumpton Ln, turn right to go along the long avenue into the estate. Turn right at the first crossroads just by the lake, for another long straight stretch. Turn right just before the (locked) gates back onto the main road to instead go to the cottages. Voila!
Hope that helps folks get there,
Have a fun time!
